Ms. Harris Patterson Park Public Charter School Baltimore, MD
Ms. Harris has taught at Patterson Park Public Charter School for 13 years; she was one of the founding teachers of this school when it opened in 2005. She received her BS in Education from Auburn and a Masters’ degree in Early Childhood from Towson University.
Ms. Harris has 23 students in her classroom. Her favorite children’s book is The Best Nest by P.D. Eastman. It is the first book She ever read and has remained her favorite. The favorite part of Serena’s day is Social Studies and Science, when the students get to work together on projects and learn about things outside their immediate world.
Ms. Harris and Helene Luce, the PA, trained the students to answer the Tutormate “phone.” Serena says that not only do the two greeters, Gabby and BJ, have great ears, but the rest of the class pays attention to the ring, too! But then they quickly get back to work. Some students have done so well that they “graduated” from tutoring and other students had a chance. One boy who was able to start tutoring in February, Adrian, had been very excited every time the phone rang. Once it was for him, he was over the moon!
WHAT MAKES THIS CLASSROOM SUCCESSFUL
It takes several steps for a teacher to ensure students have productive tutoring sessions with their tutors. This teacher has shown exceptional achievement in the following areas:
Scheduling Details: The teacher not only has a carefully designed schedule, she notifies the tutors in weekly updates about assemblies and field trips.
Classroom management: Ms. Harris is calm and supportive with all of her students and makes sure they don’t interrupt each other.
Teacher-Tutor Messaging: As part of her morning routine, Ms. Harris takes attendance and immediately goes to the TutorMate tab and reports it there, too. If she doesn’t hear from a tutor, she messages them. She is also outstanding at replying to Tutors’ messages.
Frequency of Reading Stage Updates: Ms. Harris updates every time they do progress monitoring, about every 6 weeks.
Reading Stage Growth: Most students have shown significant reading stage growth since they began the school year.
Takes attendance every morning
Responsive to tutor and PA messages/texts
Reaches out when there are tech issues
Last year, T Rowe Price, preferred to do a conference call instead of a meet and greet. 75% of the tutors participated on calls with each teacher. Ms. O’Connor loved how the teacher and tutor were able to compare notes, and both showed genuine interest in that student. Although we have not tracked individual students’ progress, all teachers noted that TutorMate has a big impact on the students’ self-esteem and love of reading. T Rowe Price was a new tutor of the year in 2016-17. The first grade team works really well together, truly care about students, and have a great deal of empathy.
