Ms. Smith J.O. Wilson Elementary School Washington, D.C.
Ms. Smith started her teaching career at J.O. Wilson and has now taught at the school for 21 years! The majority of her career has been teaching 1st graders. She says she loves this age because you get to see so much growth and it is amazing to see students learn to love reading as they get better and better at it.
It is clear that she instills a sense of joy and love of learning in her classroom. The second you walk into her room you notice there are interactive stations set up around the room and words and color covering every wall. There is a table for word-building using blocks, decoding/blending flashcards, and student work everywhere. Spend just a few moments in the room and you will hear multiple call and response techniques that encourage students and keep them on-track. Ms Smith says her students love TutorMate and know exactly what day and time their tutors call because they are so excited for their turn.
“It has truly been a great pleasure and experience to work with Tutor Mate over the years! I love this program! It has been a great asset in my classroom for my students!!!" - Ms. Smith
WHAT MAKES THIS CLASSROOM SUCCESSFUL
It takes several steps for a teacher to ensure students have productive tutoring sessions with their tutors. This teacher has shown exceptional achievement in the following areas:
Call Success Rates: Ms Smith’s call success rate is almost 90%. Like everything in her room, students are respectful of the systems and procedures she has taught them, TutorMate included. Students have been taught how to properly care for the technology in the classroom and the TutorMate laptop is no exception. There are a few students who are responsible for answering phone calls. Her schedule is updated if/when there are irregularities in the schedule but in general, everything runs like a well-oiled machine like everything in her room!
Reading Stage Growth: Students in Ms Smith’s class have grown an average of three reading stages since the beginning of the year.
Frequency of Reading Stage Updates: Ms Smith updates Reading Stages when reading testing occurs throughout the year.
PERSONAL FAVORITES: Ms Smith’s favorite time of day is literacy. She especially loves teaching vocabulary and seeing how students utilize the vocabulary when they talk amongst themselves. She says, “That’s why I have so many words around the room. I love seeing kids blossom, and empower themselves with what they’ve learned. I love when kids feel good about school, and know can do anything they set their minds to.”
