Ms. Valdora has been teaching for 12 years and this is her 10th year at Mahatma Gandhi PS #23. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from New Jersey City University, and two masters degrees: a Master of Arts in Administration from St. Peter’s University and a Master of Arts in Mathematics from New Jersey City University.
Her favorite children’s book is anything from Tomie de Paola. Ms. Valdora says, “He has been my favorite author since I was in second grade. He was also my 2nd grade teacher Mrs. K’s favorite author. I love reading Strega Nona, this story incorporates some Italian words and the students always laugh when I change my voice to have an Italian accent. The story also teaches a lesson. Big Anthony did not listen to Strega Nona and his consequence was eating a lot of pasta. Not really a consequence!”
As a first-grade teacher, Ms. Valdora loves how children are in awe of the world around them. “They look through special glasses and see no evil in the world. Their hearts are very pure. I love being able to help mold future leaders of our country.”
WHAT MAKES THIS CLASSROOM SUCCESSFUL
It takes several steps for a teacher to ensure students have productive tutoring sessions with their tutors. This teacher has shown exceptional achievement in the following areas:
Scheduling: Tutors are evenly scheduled throughout the week, for the most part, two each day, with sessions in the morning. This even scheduling makes the program feel like a regular part of the week for the class.
Student Greeter info: “My student greeters are amazing. They are extremely responsible and polite. They take pride in their job and also get excited when a call comes in. When a call comes in the quietly tap on the student’s shoulder and tell them they have a call. No instructional time is lost.”
Classroom management: Ms. Valdora has an excellent rapport with her students. She loves the TutorMate program because the students love having one on one interaction and special attention. They look forward to their call all week. She adds, “The students know their tutoring schedule better than I do. The tutors are amazing and provide updates regularly and Ms. Ana supports us with any issue that might arise.”
Teacher-Tutor Messaging: Messages tutors whenever unexpected events cause students to be unavailable.
Frequency of Reading Stage Updates: Updates their student's reading stages on a consistent basis, ensuring they are working at the appropriate reading level with their tutors.
Reading Stage Growth: The reading proficiency of the TutorMate students has grown an average of 5 levels (as of May 2018). There should be even more progress by the end of the year.
Teacher Responsiveness: Ms. Valdora takes attendance daily, and she responds very quickly to tutor messages. She is a pleasure for a Program Ambassador, because of her commitment to the program, her enthusiasm, and her understanding of the benefits the program brings to her students.
KPMG is the TutorMate partner for Ms. Valdora's class this year. The KPMG tutors have been very hands on and supportive throughout the year in tutoring their students. Supported by Principal Mr. Mattaliano, Vice-Principal Mr. Salgado, Reading Specialist Kim Silk and the great tutors from KPMG these first grade students are receiving weekly literacy-based tutoring through our remote tutoring program.
