Ms. Luppino Thomas H. Dudley Elementary School Camden, NJ
Ms. Luppino has taught in the Camden City School District for 15 years, and this is her second year at Dudley School. She graduated with a B.A. in Elementary Education from Kean University, she also has a degree in Theater. Ms. Luppino loves that her class has come such a long way with their reading. Her favorite Children's Literature is "The Giving Tree" by Shell Silverstein and "The True Story of the Three Little Pigs" by Jon Scieszka. Ms. Luppino's students love when they are told it's their turn with the tutor. She appreciates all the time and effort the tutors give to each child.
Ms. Luppino believes TuturMate has helped the students show growth in their reading. Having another adult talk with the students and give their focus on the students really makes a difference.
Her favorite children's books, The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein and The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka. Her favorite time of the day would have to be during centers. That's when the children can move to different stations to practice their reading strategies and of course, it's also one of the times when the students go on TutorMate.
WHAT MAKES THIS CLASSROOM SUCCESSFUL
It takes several steps for a teacher to ensure students have productive tutoring sessions with their tutors. This teacher has shown exceptional achievement in the following areas:
Scheduling: Creates a classroom schedule careful to block out periods for breakfast, prep, and early dismissal. They make changes to their schedule when needed to alert tutors so the tutors know when not to call.
Student Greeter info: There is a student greeter, and a substitute greeter, that promptly answers all calls with a friendly hello. The greeter knows to quietly tell the student his/her tutor is waiting.
Classroom management: Using their tutoring voices helps to not disrupt the learning process. The teacher messages tutors whenever unexpected events causes students to be unavailable.
Teacher-Tutor Messaging: Messages tutors whenever unexpected events cause students to be unavailable.
Frequency of Reading Stage Updates: Reading stages are updated in congruence with student STEP testing. This is an important part of the overall classroom experience for students, as to make sure that content delivered across all programs are appropriate for the students’ reading level.
Reading Stage Growth: In Ms. Luppino’s classroom, participating students are seeing an average growth of 4 reading levels since October of this school year. This growth puts many of our students at and above their 1st grade reading goal.
Teacher Responsiveness: Ms. Luppino consistently maintains open communication with her Program Ambassador and tutors. When a student is having any difficulty or a tech issue arises, Ms. Luppino works with her student and reaches out for help so that no tutoring time is lost.
Our Macquarie tutors have been very enthusiastic and helpful throughout the year in tutoring their students. Here are few quotes from our Macquarie tutors:
“OUR BEST SESSION YET! Yashiah seemed much more comfortable this week. We also used the whiteboard to practice words ending in -ed and saw much improvement.”
“Aniyah is a delightful little girl that really tries. It is a pleasure working with her. She did very well on her reading today.”
“Evangelis did really well! She was reading hard words in the story, and always can master the comprehension questions. I can tell she is getting better and better.”
