Ms. Vander Kolk Martin Weiss Elementary School Dallas, TX
Ms. Vander Kolk
Ms. Vander Kolk, (Ms. VK as known by her students), has taught for Dallas ISD Schools for four years, and at Martin Weiss for one year. She moved to the DFW area five years ago from Omaha, NE. She has a Bachelors degree in Business Administration- HR Management from UNO-University of Nebraska at Omaha. After living in Texas for about nine months, she learned that she could go through Dallas ISD's Alternative Certification program to become a teacher. She talked it over with my family and decided it was a great opportunity to do something she always thought about doing anyway. Her first three years teaching were at John H. Reagan Elementary, with her first year teaching 1st grade. She taught Kindergarten the following two years. This year she has been back teaching 1st grade, but at a new school, Martin Weiss Elementary. Her one year old son keeps her on her toes when she's not in the classroom. "I feel blessed to be able to teach and to have been a part of the Tutormate program. The kids have been grateful to be a part of Tutormate as well." -Ms. VK
WHAT MAKES THIS CLASSROOM SUCCESSFUL
Ms. Vander Kolk takes several steps to ensure her students have productive tutoring sessions with their tutors. She has shown exceptional achievement in the following areas:
Scheduling: Carefully blocks out periods for breakfast, prep, and early dismissal. She updates her online online calendar whenever there are changes to the schedule so the tutors know when not to call
Student Greeter info: Ms. Vander Kolk has trained a student to bring the requested tutee to the TutorMate PC when the tutor calls the classroom
Classroom management: Cultivates helpful habits in her students, such as teaching them to use their tutoring voices and respecting the “Quiet Please” sign
Teacher-Tutor Messaging: Messages tutors whenever unexpected events cause students to be unavailable
Frequency of Reading Stage Updates: Updates her students reading stages on a monthly basis, ensuring they are working at the appropriate reading level with their tutors
Reading Stage Growth: Most students have grown 5 or more reading stages since they began the school year.
Responsive to tutor and PA messages / texts
