Ms. Downing is passionate about her vocation. With 24 years as a teacher, Ms. Downing believes in teachable moments and lifelong learning for all of us. She is constantly studying, observing, and collaborating about the teaching process and strives to pass on this love of learning to her students.
In addition to the basics Ms. Downing wants her students to be confident they will be able to adjust and grow in our changing world. Ms. Downing has Bachelor's Degree in Child Development and a Master's Degree in Educational Administration as well as a Special Education Credential, along with additional training in Reading Recovery, Language Acquisition, and Mathematics. She continually attends outside Professional Development as well.

Scheduling: Thoughtful planning of her Tutor session schedule ensures success and includes providing more tutor slots than needed which gives the tutors flexibility in holding sessions with their students.
Student Greeter info: Ms. Downing placed the TutorMate station in a quiet corner and made training student greeters part of her communication lessons; training all students to answer the TutorMate calls.
Classroom management: Ms. Downing’s students know what is expected from them and the minute you enter this classroom there is visible evidence of personal responsibility, cooperation and teamwork.
Teacher-Tutor Messaging: Ms. Downing respects and values the tutors time and commitment and makes sure to stay in contact with them using TutorMate messages as well as frequently sending emails.
Frequency of Reading Stage Updates: Communicating with tutors about the students current reading stages is part of what makes this a high fidelity classroom.
Reading Stage Growth: 40% of students are reading on or above grade level
Teacher Responsiveness: Ms. Downing knows that TutorMate works when all involved communicate regularly. Being aware of when tutoring sessions are scheduled, taking attendance and communicating changes with tutors makes for a high success rate.
What Ms. Downing likes best about TutorMate is giving her emerging readers time with a caring adult to improve reading proficiency. TutorMate is easy to implement and the payoff is big.
